Janet Borden, Inc. is pleased to announce Players, a new exhibition of color photographs by Tina Barney.

Tina Barney expands her subject matter to include fashion, performers, and actors, as well as her own circle of friends. Emboldened by the cacophony on stage, Barney's photographs taken during theater performances embrace a more casual aesthetic that is visually exhilarating. Portraits also add to the mix with Leo Castelli and his wife Barbara in an enigmatic and compelling portrait. In another, two women from The Wooster Group embrace in a Mephistophelian clinch. These photographs are edgy, yet still they still exhibit Barney's signature sense of color and gesture.

In her two previous books, Tina Barney chose to look at families in America and their milieu and then carried on this examination of families in Europe. Now she combines commercial assignment, dating back as far as 1988, with editorial, fashion, and portraiture. Selections from her personal work complete the mix. The result is refreshing, revealing and curious. Barney has always been fascinated by the circumstances in which her subjects operate. Whether performing publicly or privately, they are all “players.”
