Lee Friedlander These square format images continue Friedlander's ongoing project of dismantling all the genres of photography, replacing old tropes with new.  Wrinkles, grimaces, guts and squints take the place of nubile models and posed smiles.  Lampshades and toys appear growing out of heads.  Long-standing couples interact casually, and helicoptering parents all but smother their young.

Lee Friedlander Janet Borden, Inc. is pleased to present “Topsy Turvy,” a summer group show featuring Mark Gonzales, Donald Sultan, and Carl Warner. These three photographers take a look at time and chance, perspective and realism, with surprisingly diverse and amusing results. Skateboarder Mark Gonzalez, “the Gonz,” is literally a photographer on the move. Using his Sidekick mobile phone camera while skateboarding, his photographs add a fresh perspective to urban photography. Donald Sultan’s photographs of smoke rings—undulating white forms against a black background—take on a spare but formal rigor. This series combines the organic and the reductive to create hypnotically beautiful images. British photographer Carl Warner photographs tableaux he has constructed entirely out of food. These “foodscapes,” using materials as diverse as smoked salmon, broccoli, nuts and potatoes, address concepts of hyperrealism and surrealism with almost hallucinatory results.
